Competition rules

1. System and ranking procedure of the competition

  1. - This competition consists of preliminary matches and final tournament.
  2. - Preliminary matches are held on the first day joined by all programs to choose 16 teams that proceed to the final tournament held on the second day. An anomalistic Swiss style will be used for the preliminary-game matching up to the sixth game, and the Swiss style for the seventh game (final match).
  3. - If the number of programs participating to the preliminary games is odd, GNU_Go will be added.
  4. - To decide the ranking of the preliminary games, after draws being converted to 0.5 wins and 0.5 losses, the following conditions are applied in the order of listing.
    1. (1) Competitors with the higher number of wins are ranked higher.
    2. (2) Competitors with the higher score of Solkoff (the total number of wins of all the opponents) are ranked higher.
    3. (3) Competitors with the higher score of SB (the total number of wins of opponents they have defeated) are ranked higher.
    4. (4) As for the competitors in the same rank based on (1) to (3), those with higher scores of DB (the number of wins minus the number of losses) are ranked higher.
    5. (5) Decided by lot.
  5. - The final tournament is conducted as shown in the tournament chart (Picture X) in accordance with the order of the preliminary-match ranking, and will decide the first to sixteenth competitors.

2. Awarding

  1. - First to eighth competitors are the winners and will receive the certificate of commendation.
  2. - First to third competitors will receive the ornament.
  3. - As an extra prize (Toshin Award ), the first winner will receive 300,000 yen, the second, 100,000 yen, and the third, 50,000 yen.
  4. - Among programs that are developed mainly by students and have proceeded to the final tournament, the one ranked highest will receive the Student Award.
  5. - As an extra prize for the Student Award (Toshin Incentive Award), the winner will receive grant money up to 300,000 yen as participation fees and travel expenses for computer Go competitions held overseas within a year. However, programs that have received grant money as travel expenses for this competition are excluded.
  6. - Among programs that participate in this competition for the first or second time, the one ranked the highest will win the New Face Award and receive a certificate of commendation and an ornament. However, developers who have already received the award (ex. Outstanding Young Author Prize) are excluded.
  7. - A developer who has brought an innovative and creative program adding excitement to the competition will win the Creative Award and receive the certificate of commendation and an ornament.

3. Time limit

  1. - Time limit for each player is 30 minutes.
  2. - The time will be measured by the NNGS server.

4. Handling of draws

  1. - In the case of preliminary matches, both players win by 0.5 times.
  2. - In the case of the final tournament, they play another game with their remaining time as time limit. (Seconds are rounded up to minutes.)
  3. - If the remaining time is below 10 minutes, it is handled as 10 minutes.
  4. - If they draw for more than two times, they play another game with the remaining time of 5 minutes each.

5. Reporting game results

  1. - Take a result recording form at the UEC Cup office upon the beginning of a game, and when the game finishes, fill in the result and sign the sheet. The winner brings it to the office. When the referee decides the result, then the referee must also sign the sheet.

6. Cancellation and being late

  1. - When participants cancel the participation, contact the UEC Cup office before the application deadline of the preliminary-match participation (9:20).
  2. - When failing to tell the office about a cancellation before the application deadline of the preliminary-match participation (9:20), the participants are regarded as having renounced the participation and may get a warning from the organizer and/or be imposed restrictions on participation from the next time.
  3. - When participants tell the office about their being late before the application deadline of the preliminary-match participation, the organizing chair will decide on the handling according to the reason and/or when they can show up.
  4. - In the case of the final tournament, participants are considered late when they are not at the venue by the time appointed by the organizer for each game without notice. Their limit time is reduced by the amount of the lost time. However, the chair will decide on the handling in the case of a situation he considers as being reasonable such as traffic accident and sudden illness.
  5. - When a participant is absent or significantly late for the final tournament without notice, he/she may get a warning from the organizer and/or be imposed restrictions on participation from the next time.
